For Bachelor of Science student Trinity Shires, university life in Hobart has been shaped not only by her love of zoology but also by the strong, supportive community she’s found at Jane.
Originally from Burnie on Tasmania’s Northwest Coast, Trinity knew that transitioning to university would mean more than just a change of academic pace—it would mean leaving home and stepping into a new and unfamiliar environment.
“Coming from a rural area, I really wanted to be part of a community,” she explains. “That’s why I chose Jane. It’s not just a place to stay—it’s a place to belong.”
From the beginning, Jane stood out to Trinity for its reputation as a welcoming, student-focused residential college. The convenience of the dining hall, the support of peer tutors, and the chance to take part in student-led clubs and intercollege sports made the transition from home to university life easier than she expected.
“There’s something nice about being able to sit down with people and eat,” Trinity says. “I like being able to have my own space, but also the balance of coming in and hanging out with other people.”
Trinity regularly participates in events organised by the student club committee, and says activities like swimming, soccer and cricket have helped her feel part of something bigger. “Jane is really good at including people from as many different interests as possible to be involved, which I thought was good.”
“You meet people from all across the country,” she says. “There are a few of us from Burnie as well, and it’s really nice to see some familiar faces here. It’s really welcoming and supportive.”
With access to quiet study spaces, consistent transportation via the Jane Bus (which connects students to multiple locations within Hobart), and the encouragement of staff and fellow residents, Trinity has been able to stay focused on her studies and enjoy life on campus.
She has also received financial support through the James Fenton Memorial Scholarship and a residential scholarship, which have helped make college life more accessible.
