  • For recent grad 12 graduates
    If you’ve just finished grade 12 and want to become a teacher, enrol in one of our double degrees. A Bachelor of Arts and Master of Teaching, Bachelor of Science and Master of Teaching, or Bachelor of Outdoor and Environmental Education and Master of Teaching allows you to combine your subject specialisation with a teaching degree in a seamless pathway.
  • For those starting a degree before teaching
    If you’ve been out of school for a few years or want to complete a bachelor’s degree before teacher training, you can study your chosen degree first, then follow it with a Master of Teaching (Secondary Stream). This pathway gives you flexibility if you’re not moving straight from Year 12 into a teaching degree.
  • Already have a degree
    Already have a degree? The Master of Teaching (Secondary Stream) gives you a streamlined pathway to becoming a qualified teacher.

Undergraduate (First degree)

The Bachelor of Education (Primary) course prepares you for primary teaching roles, from Prep to Grade 6. In Australia, primary school teachers often work with a whole class and teach in multiple curriculum areas.

Your studies will prepare you with broad knowledge of many learning areas. The first two years of your degree will focus on the foundations of teaching with the opportunity to explore key curriculum areas across English, numeracy, music and arts, health and physical education, and humanities and social sciences. You will then choose a teaching proficiency to develop your teaching capabilities in a particular learning area.

This specialised degree sets you up to teach health and physical education at either primary or secondary schools. Learn to provide students with the skills and knowledge to sustain their health and wellbeing. We also offer proficiencies in the additional learning areas of maths, science, and humanities and social sciences.

In this double degree you’ll complete an undergraduate bachelor’s degree and postgraduate master’s degree in a streamlined course of study, in a shorter time than studying the courses individually, and graduate with both qualifications.

This will accelerate your career allowing you to graduate in just 4-years. In the Bachelor of Arts, you’ll take on the world’s cultural, environmental and humanitarian challenges from multiple perspectives and gain the confidence to make a positive difference. Your studies will deepen your knowledge, which you will build on in your chosen teaching specialisation.

The Master of Teaching is accredited through the Tasmanian Teachers Registration Board and is recognised in all Australian states and territories. You’ll be able to choose whether to teach at a primary or secondary school level. The specialisations you teach will depend on the Major you complete in the Bachelor of Arts.

How do I apply for this course?

In this double degree, you’ll complete both an undergraduate bachelor’s degree and a postgraduate master’s degree in a streamlined course of study - finishing in less time than if you studied them separately. You’ll fast-track your studies by taking master's units as part of your bachelor's degree, with these units counting towards both qualifications. This reduces your total coursework while still providing all the essential skills and knowledge.

Your studies will begin with the undergraduate component, building your knowledge and confidence before progressing to the postgraduate component, which typically starts in the third year and expands on your foundation.

If you wish to undertake the double degree, you need to apply for the Bachelor of Arts, and select the Bachelor of Arts and Master of Teaching option.

The University of Tasmania is one of few universities in Australia that offer a double degree combing a Bachelor of Science with a Master of Teaching. In this double degree you’ll complete an undergraduate bachelor’s degree and postgraduate master’s degree in a streamlined course of study, in a shorter time than studying the courses individually, and graduate with both qualifications.

This will accelerate your career allowing you to graduate with two professional qualifications in just 4-years. In the Bachelor of Science, you'll develop core skills in science, analysis, and rational thinking. Add sustainability to your degree

As part of our commitment to sustainability, we have created a complementary, optional major available across most of our flexible bachelor's degrees.

In the major, explore interdisciplinary knowledge and skills that underpin the development of sustainable societies and solutions. Informed by international and local research, practice, and theory, this major allows you to develop specialist expertise across the physical and social sciences and humanities, emphasising student-led and problem-based learning.

Commonwealth Teaching Scholarships

If you’re starting your teaching journey you could be eligible for up to $40,000 from the Australian Government to support your studies. This incredible opportunity is part of the Commonwealth Teaching Scholarships Program, designed to attract high-achieving and passionate individuals, whether you’re a school leaver or looking to change careers.

The scholarship supports both undergraduate and postgraduate students in initial teacher education (ITE) programs, helping cover the costs of your studies. In return, you’ll contribute to shaping the future by teaching in government schools or government-run early learning settings for a period equivalent to the length of your course. With up to 1,000 scholarships available each year between 2024 and 2028, now is the perfect time to take the first step towards a fulfilling teaching career.
