Social work student masters the study-life balance

Study

Studying social work is more than just a degree for Maranda McCutcheon. She described it as a life-changing journey, driven by compassion, lived experience, and the dream of creating a better future for her daughter.

“My daughter is the reason I do this,” she said.

“I want to show her that it’s possible to chase your goals, even when life is challenging. Every time I walk into class or finish an assignment, it’s for her future too.”

While she’s always felt drawn to helping others, motherhood gave Maranda a new perspective and a clear path toward studying a Bachelor of Social Work at the University of Tasmania’s Inveresk campus.

“Parenthood really opened my eyes to how important strong support systems are,” she said. “I want to be someone who helps make things easier for others.

”She described the Inveresk campus as a welcoming environment, and said the high level of support she received has made a huge difference to her studies.

“My lecturers have been amazing. They’re flexible, understanding, and genuinely care about your success, not just as a student, but as a person.

“There’s a real sense of community here, from admin staff to classmates. That support helps when you’re balancing study and parenting.”

Her daughter, who often joins her on campus for walks or study breaks, has become part of the experience: “She thinks she’s studying too!”

Placement opportunities have been a standout part of the experience for Maranda, helping her apply theory in real-world settings. Eventually she hopes to work in areas supporting families and children, creating safer and more inclusive spaces for those in need.

“Being in the field has been incredible,” she said. “It reminds you why you’re here – to help people.

“I want to advocate for people who might not have a voice. Helping others access support and feel seen, that’s the kind of impact I want to make.”

For others thinking about studying – especially parents – her advice is clear: just start.

“There’s never a perfect time, but there is support,” she said.

“Since starting this degree, I’ve grown so much, as a student, a mother, and a person. If I can do it, others can too.”
